When these buckets were released for the first time in 1986, they were orange in color. The buckets resembled a pumpkin and had three varieties –
- McPunk’n – lantern face
- McBoo – face of a ghost
- McGoblin – it was the scariest.
These amazing buckets were enough to celebrate the whole Halloween night. It could hold so many treats inside. It was large enough to get a lot of treats in the bucket. Moreover, these buckets were later used to store items. Some people kept their cash in it while some used to store accessories and stuff in these buckets. While some used it to keep stickers and makeup. Therefore, there were multiple uses of these McBuckets.

Everyone knows that this bucket was first launched in 1986. But what if we tell you that this is not the first time it was sold? In New York and Boston, McDonald’s promoted these buckets to test. These test promotions were held from 11th October 1985 to 31st October 1985.
Moreover, these test promotions were extremely successful. After the success, these buckets were launched nationally in 1986. Furthermore, people went crazy over this McBoo trend.
In 1987, these buckets came back again around Halloween fever. The sales were immense. People enjoyed celebrating Halloween with Boo buckets.
Unfortunately, these mcdonalds halloween buckets did not make an entry in 1988 due to unknown reasons. People missed the boo buckets as they were expecting their return in the year.
Furthermore, these buckets made their return in the year 1989 with a wild makeover.
The Mcboo bucket turned white and the three friends got a new one with them – McWitch. It had a pointy had on its light resembling that of a witch.
In the next year, new designs were introduced. The faces on the buckets were wildly changed and were turned into more of a cartoon. Moreover, one more thing was introduced in the buckets. Glow-in-the-dark concept was added to the buckets.
Furthermore, these plastic buckets were replaced by vinyl bags which glowed in the dark. This transformation was made in the year 1991. People who loved mcdonalds halloween buckets were not so happy about this transformation. On the other hand, some liked it a lot.
Again in the next year, some changes were made in the buckets. A cookie-cutter lid was added in the makeover along with some changes in the facial expressions of all the McBoo characters.
According to some sources, it was the last time McDonald’s offered good-quality mcdonalds halloween buckets. In the next year, a modern look was given to the boo buckets. This makeover didn’t attract many customers. The Halloween buckets of 1993 looked less attractive than the buckets from the previous years.
In the following years. The buckets disappeared till 1999.
The appearance of the buckets was wildly different. There were no spooky faces and the pumpkin look was gone! The cookie cutter was still there while the buckets were wrapped with printed paper. The printed paper had McDonald’s characters on it.
In the later years, the cookie cutters were also made unavailable. The handles of the buckets were made in the shape of bat wings. People found it very uncomfortable holding the handle of those buckets. There were just a few who liked the new look.
In 2011, it made a better comeback with the spooky faces again along with the bat wings. But it was the last time people saw these spooky buckets. In 2022, McDonald’s again released the buckets in the old spooky style. It was so nostalgic for many people. Moreover, McDonald’s continued the tradition in 2023!
